- Design - N.L.Heineke, Inc. sporting
rifles are designed in the context of a three hundred yard shot.
- Ergonomics - Ergonomics differs
from shootability because it addresses how a rifle...
- Aesthetics - Aesthetics are
important. This is perhaps the tertiary reason...
- Balance - A best-quality firearm
is a gesture of balance...
- Shootability - Shootability is the
gun trades term for user friendly.
- Historical Reference - In the not-so-distant past of our country, the firearm...
LONGEVITY - Museums around world hold testaments
to the longevity of steel and walnut. Displays are filled with antique
firearms, many of which are hundreads of years old, and their integrity
is stunning. The life span of these materials is a known quality.
What we do not know is the life span of modern synthetics. How many
wonder materials from the 60’s and 70’s, once touted as
lasting forever, are now brittle, frail and in decay?
Fine firearms stand in the rarified air of objects from which time
does not detract either beauty or effectiveness. Take a 1920’s
Griffin and Howe sporting rifle on safari and, not only will the
rifle appear to be in its element, but it will perform with great
effectiveness. Few other objects can claim that serviceability after
80 years.
But longevity is not simply using the right materials, or good craftsmanship;
it is as much designed into a firearm as it is built in. Reliability
and repairability are factors as important as caliber selection
and craftsmanship.
For instance, choosing an established cartridge design ensures
a continued availability of ammunition, thus ensuring the future
use of the rifle.
Choosing an action is equally important. Parts should be robust,
reparable and, if not available, manufacturable. Actions made of
machined steel parts are excellent candidates, whereas actions made
of stampings, injection moldings and exotic compounds are suspect.
Adhering to aesthetic principles helps create a work of timeless
beauty. Fads and fashions come and go, but the principles governing
artistic sensibilities are immutable and insurance that the beauty
will not degrade with time.
- Repairability - Anything, including
people and animals, needs to be repairable to be long-lived.
- Cartridge Selection - Cartridge
selection is a choice beset by personal preferences...
- Scope Selection - While it is true
you cannot hit what you cannot see...
- Stock Design - Good stock design
is essential to shootability. A stock must be tailored...
- Ordering and Pricing - N.L. Heineke, Inc. produces only one grade of rifle - the best we know how to build.
